Is your roof panel machine making marks or stopping suddenly? Even the best equipment can hit a snag. Let’s look at the top 5 common problems with roof roll forming machines—and how to solve them.
1. Inconsistent Panel Length
Culprit: The measurement encoder is worn out or the hydraulic shear cutting timing is off.
- Quick Fix: Inspect the encoder connection. Re-calibrate the PLC cutting delay settings. Consistent material speed is key to getting precise length.
2. Roller Marks or Scratches on Panels
Culprit: Dirt, debris, or metal shavings on your rollers.
- Quick Fix: Follow a preventive maintenance schedule. Regularly wipe down and inspect the rollers, ensuring they are free of any buildup. If a roller is chipped, replace it immediately.
3. Material Slipping or Misfeeding
- Culprit: Insufficient pinch roller pressure or an incorrectly adjusted entry guide.
- Quick Fix: Increase the hydraulic pressure slightly on the pinch rollers. Realign the entry guide so the metal feeds perfectly straight.
4. Machine Vibration or Unusual Noise
- Culprit: Loose bearings, worn gear transmission, or an un-lubricated chain.
- Quick Fix: Shut down immediately. Inspect the gearbox oil level. Tighten all loose bolts. If the bearings are rusted, they need to be replaced.
5. Poor Panel Flatness (Bow or Twist)
- Culprit: Roller gaps are uneven or pressure distribution is wrong.
- Quick Fix: Incrementally adjust the roller gap and pressure, testing after each adjustment. Sometimes, the entire roll tooling set may need re-alignment.
Proactive Maintenance is Key
The best way to avoid production stops is a simple Weekly Checklist:
- Clean all oil and debris from the machine frame.
- Lubricate all chains, sprockets, and moving parts.
- Inspect your hydraulic oil level and hoses for leaks.
- Test your emergency stop and safety guards.
